“Le Mans 2014: Day 1 on the way to Le Mans 2015.”
That’s how Porsche summarizes its ultimately unsuccessful return this month to the top class of Le Mans prototype racing.
Porsche is the winningest marque in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with 16 overall victories, so its return to LMP1 racing with a two-car 919 Hybrid attack added further drama to what’s always a tense affair.
But a storybook ending just wasn’t in the cards; fellow VW Group member Audi notched another victory this year, continuing to gain on Porsche’s overall count with win number 13. Excruciatingly, one of Porsche’s two racers was running with the leaders until it suffered a mechanical problem late in the 24-hour race and never returned to the track. Its position was assumed by the Audi R18 e-tron quattro that went on to win the race.
