Ford’s aluminum fetish isn’t finished with the 2015 F-150. Given the enormous research and material costs Ford is taking on for its redesigned pickup, you’d expect the automaker to look for other ways to apply its newfound aluminum expertise—and what better way to quickly do so that to use it for another pickup? According to our spies, that’s exactly what’s going to happen with the next F-series Super Duty trucks.
Our spy photographer risked life and limb (or at least a very stern talking to) to film a video where he holds a magnet to a covered F-250 prototype. The magnet didn’t stick to body panels obscured by a cover or wrapped in vinyl, and it also wasn’t attracted to the bare interior of the bed; this fairly well indicates that the panels aren’t steel. Our man also performed the same tests on a current F-250, and the magnet stuck to the steel-bodied truck even with a piece of quarter-inch foam board stuck between.

We inquired about the development with Ford, who gave us the industry-standard brushoff regarding future products, only stating that it would apply “the right materials at the right time for the right vehicle to improve efficiency and performance.” All we can say is that when it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it’s probably aluminum.
