Chrysler may have to recall nearly 920,000 Jeeps worldwide or a second time if it can’t square away problems with inadvertently deploying airbags.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just opened an investigation into the November 2012 recall of 2002–2003 Jeep Liberty and 2002–2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee models. In that recall, which was prompted by a separate investigation that began in October 2011, the front or side curtain airbags could suddenly deploy due to electrical faults in the airbag system. At the time of the recall, Chrysler had received at least 215 reports of faulty deployments and 81 injuries from the airbags.
Now, Chrysler said it has received at least six reports of airbags deploying without accidents on vehicles that had been repaired with new electronics. Cuts and burns to the skin were reported, but no fatalities. In some incidents, airbag warning lights and chimes came “just seconds prior” to the deployments; other cases occurred with no warning. A total of 744,822 vehicles were affected in the U.S.

Earlier this year, Chrysler recalled more than 25,000 Grand Cherokee and Durango models from 2012–2013 for poor brake pedal feel and recalled another 868,000 from 2011–2014 for “excessive brake pedal firmness.”
