If it’s even possible to make the 2015 Ford Mustang seem uncool, this video at least comes close. Seeking to answer the question “What would you do #InaMustang?” that Ford posed to Mustang fans in a new contest, the clip is seriously weird.
We like that fans can submit Mustang-related ideas to Ford, which is picking the best ones and handing them over to filmmakers to create mini movies like this one. But unless you’re Olivia Newton-John, just don’t make your Mustang-shilling idea this . . . well, just watch the video.
Sure, with actors decked out in headbands, mustaches, and tight spandex having a synthesizer-heavy “aerobic dance battle,” the video is kitschy and “fun.” There’s even an original song called “Shimmy Fallon,” and as far as product placement deals go, it doesn’t beat you over the head with Mustangness. But it’s really trying a bit too hard, and Ford’s contest requests fans come up with stuff to do #inaMustang—not #nearaMustang. What about a video with people actually driving a Mustang? Where’s the exhaust noise? Why have these dancer people been allowed to drive the Mustang and we haven’t yet? And Shimmy Fallon? Really? But, hey, you’re watching it, so it must have worked.
