“I like the engine’s restrained demeanor, and I love the technical bristle when you stomp on the throttle and the 4.0-liter wakes up.” – Eric Tingwall
And wake up it does: When launched properly, our long-term Audi S7 can punt itself to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. Of course, you expect hairy-chested, balls-to-the-wall performance from a twin-turbo V-8 pumping out 420 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. But that’s not to say it’s a beast all the time; in fact, in everyday use, the S7 usually just oozes down the road. One reason for its eminent drivability is the relaxed throttle calibration, which means a firm foot is required to turn it into a ’bahnstormer.
Our staffers are divided on the issue, with some loving the split personality and others wanting the S7 to be a rowdier ride overall. But all of us agree that the S7’s blend of speed, style, and all-weather usability—Quattro all-wheel drive!—is pretty magical. There’s a reason the S7 sits alongside the rest of the A6/A7 lineups on our 10Best Cars list.
