In its 25th anniversary year, Mazda’s venerable Miata is perhaps more visible than it’s been since the 1990s. A new generation of young enthusiasts have taken to the car as an affordable bed for hot-rod/road-race dreams, unswayed by accusations of gender confusion. We’ve had a soft spot for the roadster from the start—the wee grin machine’s brought home 14 10Best awards over its quarter-century run.
When Mazda unveiled the 25th Anniversary Edition MX-5 Miata, we figured they’d move the American allotment with some haste. “Some haste” has now been quantified: it’s 10 minutes. That’s the time it took yesterday for 250 prospective buyers to sign up for a chance at the car. Mazda will contact the applicants, and the first 100 verified takers will be afforded the privilege of purchase.

If you’re one of them, we congratulate you. If you’re not, it’s no huge loss — you’ve still got the upcoming, lightened next-generation Miata to look forward to. And as a sop to the polyglots, you’ll be able to order that one in Italian. Grazie mille, Mr. Roboto!
