When Italian design houses like Zagato, Ghia, or Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera take to reworking the lines of legendary established sports cars, they usually come out even more beautiful. Alas, such was not the case with this latest creation, the shovel-nosed Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato, a Gallardo-based one-off that debuted at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
Commissioned by a wealthy collector who was nostalgic for the 1996 Lamborghini Raptor Zagato concept, the 5-95 Zagato does feature many design elements that are cool on their own, namely the traditional Zagato touches like the double-bubble roof, the blacked-out window pillars, and the forward-leaning rear-end profile. We also dig the floating splitter in the front intake, the four individual tailpipes poking through the matte-orange bodywork, and the six-point afterburner taillights. But such details aren’t enough to save the design from the Dustbuster maw, the pudgy cheeks, awkward rooftop air intake, the spoiler at the base of the windshield (!), and generally funky body contours. At least the car looks sort of OK in profile.

Since 2006, Zagato has brought dramatic bespoke vehicles to the annual Villa d’Este roundup, a list that includes the gorgeous BMW Zagato Coupe and Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa. Some of Zagato’s lavish creations actually are offered for sale, although not in high numbers. These include the $527K Aston Martin V12 Zagato, of which 150 were made, and the 2011 Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale that was to be built in a run of nine. Unless Zagato can find more customers willing to have their Gallardos chopped up, the 5-95 is likely to blessedly remain a one-off.
