Toyota has a name for the future, and that name is “Mirai.” Actually, that’s how all Japanese people say “future” in their native tongue, but Mirai (pronounced “mee-rye”) is now the name of the new fuel-cell vehicle known heretofore as the FCV. While the styling of the hydrogen-fueled sedan is, um, polarizing, it’s more than a little refreshing to see an acronym replaced by a name, versus the other way around.

The Mirai is making its worldwide debut this week at the Los Angeles auto show and will go on sale starting in California in mid-2015. So the future, at least as far as Toyota is concerned, is pretty close at hand.
