The utterly brutal and fantastic 6×6 variation of the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is the least subtle Geländewagen ever built. We don’t know exactly how many the company actually constructed and sold $500,000 and up, but there’s no doubt the thing blew up among the internet-trawling cognoscenti of all things outrageous. If anything, it showed there’s still a voracious appetite for vehicular antidotes to political correctness.
The 6×6 was almost undrivable in anything resembling normal traffic or urban environments due its sheer size, however, and now it seems Mercedes-Benz will provide a wieldier package for the six-wheeled truck’s particular brand of batshit insanity. Caught testing here is just such G-wagen, and while it looks semi-conventional—and rather like the love child of a Jeep Wrangler and the 6×6—it actually sports a chassis uprated and widened to the same extremes as the 6×6.
Our sources tell us that this is a serious project, and that it is likely to hit the market within the next year or so. Standing on massive wheels and Pirelli Scorpion ATR tires, this prototype features side exhaust pipes on both its left and right sides. It’s hard to tell from these photos, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this 4×4 is sporting the same portal axels as its burlier brother.

The beefy look is in all likelihood backed up by AMG’s twin-turbocharged V-8, just as in the G63 6×6. While the G65’s V-12 would be positively epic, the V-8 is almost as quick as the twelve-holer—and it is much louder, which is the way it should be anyway. Before we go, we’d like to give Mercedes props for the psychedelic camo job; it took us forever to figure out what this thing was.
