On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. The first commenter to correctly identify it as an Audi Fox was repeat winner Rob K. Specifically, this week’s shifter belongs to a 1975 Audi Fox.
The Fox shown here was featured as part of a six-sedan comparison test in our September 1975 issue. This test wasn’t our typical comparo: Our parameters were that the cars tested had to fall in the $3700-to-$6400 category and be just sporty enough to be considered a surrogate sports car for the enthusiast who needs passenger room. We tested the Fox alongside a Chevrolet Nova LN, a Lancia Beta, a Mazda RX-4, an Opel 1900, and a Saab 99EMS. The Fox was a blast to drive thanks to upgraded fuel injection and a displacement increase from 1471 cc to 1588 cc, boosting you to highway speeds with 81 horsepower. Although we didn’t crown an official winner of this group comparo, the Audi offered “more sheer speed, handling, and braking than any two-seater you could buy for its price” and performed well among its peers, making it a favorite as a stand-in sports car.
