Last year, filmmaker Luke Aker decided to have some fun when he put his beater ’96 Nissan Maxima on Craigslist. He also made a video promoting the car in the style of an actual luxury-car commercial. Here it is:
What he didn’t expect was for the video to go completely viral—it’s racked up nearly 2 million YouTube hits since its debut—and for Nissan to take notice. And by “take notice,” we mean buy the car. As a further goodwill gesture, Nissan also made a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in Aker’s name. (You can donate to them yourself by clicking here.) Then Nissan asked its fans what it should do with the car.
Their response? Restore it! So that’s what Nissan did. It took around six months to complete, and when it was done, they went back to Aker and asked him to film a follow-up video. It’s about as good as the original:
So what of the car? It’s now on display at Nissan’s HQ in Nashville. As you can see, no expense was spared, right down to the “New Car Scent” Little Tree air freshener:
- Nissan Sports Sedan Concept: Don’t Call It the Next Maxima (OK, It’s the Next Maxima)
- LeMons Engineering Success Story: Cadillac Northstar–Powered Nissan Maxima

So If you want to go see the world’s nicest 1996 Maxima, swing by the Nissan lobby in the Music City. And if you can’t, no biggie. I have a feeling this thing will make an auto-show appearance with the new Maxima whenever it’s unveiled next year.
