If there’s been a charge leveled at the four-ringed VW Group division as of late, it’s that its post-Bauhaus design language might be getting a mite stale. New design chief Marc Lichte aims to buck those accusations by mining the brand’s recent past for cues. Said cues are set to be revealed to the populace at large at next month’s L.A. auto show, but in this teaser video, Lichte offers a split-second glimpse of the next Audi concept, rumored to be the basis of an upcoming A9.
Lichte claims the new look draws inspiration from the OG A8, the ’89 Audi 90 GTO IMSA car, and the Gropius-tribute first-gen TT. Late ’80s/early ’90s retro is now in full swing, apparently. Or at least lip service to it is, as the visible corner of the new concept seems nothing but wholly modern. It also happens to look pretty mean.
