To get folks stoked for the debut of the Beetle GRC at the Port of Los Angeles Global Rallycross event this weekend, Volkswagen has released a bitchin’ video of the thing in action. With well over 500 horsepower on tap, the Beetle-based machine is one of the most powerful rally cars in the world.
Though its engine is similar to the one in VW Motorsport’s World Rally Championship Polo, the GRC Beetle’s powerplant is different in one key way: Instead of the FIA/WRC-mandated air restrictor with a 33-mm opening bolted to its turbocharger, GRC rules allow for a larger, 45-mm restrictor. The extra airflow allowed the team to extract more than 200 additional horsepower from the 1.6-liter four-cylinder bandbox. The result is stunning, a sort of modern-day equivalent of a mid-’80s Group B monster.
