The BMW 6 Series has little in common with the Porsche 911, but that could soon change with the next-generation model. According to our friends at AUTOMOBILE, BMW is making last-minute changes to the new 6 Series with the intent of making it a Porsche 911 fighter.
Targeting the 911 would require a drastic departure from the current and model, which includes a coupe, convertible, and the four-door Gran Coupe. According to the report, BMW will axe the convertible and the Gran Coupe from the lineup, leaving just the coupe model.
The new 6 Series would ride on BMW’s new CLAR platform (used in the new 7 Series sedan) with smaller dimensions than the current model. It’ll be much lighter, too, with the report claiming a weight reduction of around 500 pounds. Under the hood, BMW could possible use a quad-turbo, inline-six good for at least 550 hp. Optional performance bits like an air suspension and rear-wheel steering could also be a possibility.
According to the report, re-positioning the 6 Series as a true performance car will allow BMW to justify a new 9 Series model, which could include new versions of the current 6 Series Gran Coupe and convertible. The new 6 Series is reportedly slated to go on sale in 2018 or 2019, with the 9 Series following about a year later.
The report also weighs in on the new Z5, the Z4 successor that’s being co-developed with Toyota. According to AUTOMOBILE, BMW will only offer the Z5 as a soft top roadster, despite previous rumors that a hardtop coupe would also be in the cards.
