Along with celebrating 50 years of the Corolla, Japanese automaker Toyota announced that it reached a cumulative 9 million hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars sold.
The nine-million figure, or 9.014 million to be specific, is the total cumulative sales of Toyota’s hybrid vehicles since the introduction of the Coaster Hybrid EV and the first generation of Toyota Prius back in 1997.
The latest million-unit mark was achieved in a brief nine months since the last milestone, thanks in part to Toyota’s expansive hybrid lineup, including 33 hybrid and one plug-in hybrid variants sold in 90 different countries, according to Toyota.
As the automaker rolls out hybrid variants of its most popular models, especially SUVs like the RAV4 Hybrid and the ever-popular Sienna minivan, the sales will continue to spike. By 2020, Toyota says it hopes to reach 1,500,000 annual sales and 15 million cumulative sales.
Before, Toyota relied on being one of the only automakers offering hybridized vehicles in its lineup, with the undeniable success of the Prius. Now, with hybridization and electrification proliferated across the industry, Toyota might have a harder time going up against cars like the Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai Ioniq, BMW i3, and the Kia Niro. Going forward, Toyota looks to increase the number of dedicated plug-in hybrid models they offer as well, with potential full-electric vehicles in the future.
