While some Americans aren’t fans of federal government regulations looming over various industries, these new crash test videos of Indian-market cars should make even the most die-hard libertarians appreciative of U.S. automotive safety requirements.
The U.K-based Global New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) recorded the crash testing of seven popular models sold in India. The results were not good. Every model scored 0 Stars for adult/front seat occupants in the front crash tests – including those with available airbags. That’s right; several models available in India – including those from leading global automakers – aren’t available with even front airbags.
Additionally, only two models scored 2 Stars for child occupant safety, while a third car scored just 1 Star. The tests were done at speeds of approximately 40 mph (64 kmh).
Models in the recent round of testing include the Hyundai Eon, Mahindra Scorpio, Suzuki Maruti Celerio, Suzuki Maruti Eeco, and three variants of the Renault Kwid. Only one Kwid variant had a pair of front airbags. In the past three years, only two out of 16 Indian-market vehicles earned 4 Stars in NCAP testing, including one model from Toyota and one model from Volkswagen.
