Two big improvements to the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport have helped earn it the Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Thanks to additional structural reinforcements, the 2017 Santa Fe Sport passed the small overlap front evaluation with a “Good” rating, the highest mark for the test. IIHS says the Santa Fe Sport does a better job preventing cabin intrusion during a crash, while the front and side airbag have also improved in protecting the driver’s head. The Santa Fe Sport was previously rated “Marginal” in the small overlap front test. The crossover earned a “Good” rating in all other tests including side, moderate overlap front, roof strength, and head restraints and seats.
Another improvement for model year 2017 is the addition of an optional front crash prevention system, a requirement for TSP+ status. The feature is available on the top-spec 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T Ultimate as part of a Tech Package ($1,550) where it’s listed as “Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection.” The package also includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, an electronic parking brake, automatic high beams, and headlights that “bend” depending on the curve of the road.
The Santa Fe Sport now joins a short list of midsize SUVs with TSP+ ratings including the 2016 Honda Pilot, 2016 Nissan Murano, and the 2016 Toyota Highlander.
