Fiat-Chrysler is recalling about 346,000 Ram pickup trucks in the U.S. for defective airbags and steering brackets, according to the company and filings posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On 2014-2015 Ram 1500 Quad Cabs, the side curtain airbags may not be fitted correctly within the C-pillar. In a crash, the airbags may not properly deflate for the second row passengers and can cause unnecessary injuries. In July, during a NHTSA crash test, a Ram 1500 failed the threshold for passenger “ejection mitigation.” After NHTSA notified FCA, the automaker tested two more trucks that subsequently failed. A total of 188,047 vehicles are affected. FCA has not announced a remedy or a repair schedule. No injuries or accidents have been reported. (Note: Other outlets have recently reported a recall of 1.06 million Ram pickups for faulty driver’s-side airbags. However, this recall is not new; we covered it in late July and repairs are underway. Also in July, 667,406 Ram pickups from 2013-2015 were recalled for side and curtain airbags that could deploy when the doors are slammed shut.)
-On 2013-2014 Ram 3500 pickups and chassis cabs, plus the 2014 Ram 2500, there are steering component brackets that may have been welded poorly and can break, leading to a partial loss of steering. A total of 156,498 vehicles are affected and FCA knows of one “minor accident.” Dealers will install reinforcement brackets at a later date.

Finally, some 2014-2015 Ram 1500 4×2 EcoDiesel pickups have battery harnesses that may rub against an engine mount bracket and cause an electrical short within the battery, which can lead to a stall, a drained battery, or a fire. A total of 1655 trucks are affected. FCA said it knows of at least eight reports of stalls, blown fuses, or dead batteries resulting from this problem. Dealers will replace any worn or improperly positioned battery mounts at a later date.
