It has been more than four years since BMW and Toyota agreed to work together to develop a new sports car architecture. Finally, the project is starting to bear fruit, as our spy photographers have spotted a Toyota coupe testing on what appear to be public roads.
Judging from the rounded front end and raked rear, the sports car takes after the old Supra. Meanwhile, it bears extremely little resemblance to the FT-1 concept. Out back, the coupe features a small rear spoiler and circular taillights, though those may not be production-spec. The spy shooters also caught a glimpse of the interior, which appears to have a touchscreen protruding up out of the dashboard.
There’s a strong possibility that the new model will revive the old Supra badge, as a chief engineer at Toyota recently said people at the company were pushing for the name. Toyota also recently filed a trademark application for the Supra nameplate in Europe, although that’s no guarantee it will end up using the moniker. The sports car could arrive for the 2019 model year.
The Toyota Supra replacement looks a bit shorter and squatter than a recent prototype of its platform-mate, the BMW Z5 convertible. Rumors say the Toyota version might only be offered as a coupe.
Power could come from turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines sourced from BMW, though a Toyota-developed twin-turbo V-6 has been rumored. Toyota may contribute a hybrid engine to the mix later down the line. According to recent reports, Magna Steyr will build the rear-wheel-drive BMW and Toyota cars in Graz, Austria.
