The rumored Toyota Supra has been caught again and this time it’s on video. In addition to seeing the car in motion, the video gives us our first listen at the prototype’s engine note. Let the engine guessing game begin.
According to the video, posted by enthusiast site SupraMKV.com, the prototype was caught leaving the BMW M Test Center at the NĂ¼rburgring in Germany. The driver pulls out of the driveway before pressing the accelerator just enough to hear the engine come to life. Is it turbocharged? Naturally aspirated? Hybrid? We can’t say for sure, but there’s a good chance it’s an inline-six, since the car is being co-developed with BMW.
The rumored comeback of the Toyota Supra picked up steam in 2013 when the automaker announced it was partnering with BMW to develop a sports car. Though both companies have been hush-hush about what will come of the project, it’s widely believed that it will produce the upcoming BMW Z5 roadster (successor to the Z4) and the Toyota Supra. Toyota’s trademark of the Supra name in the U.S. and in Europe has further fed speculation.
Toyota president Akio Toyoda is eager to see the return of the Supra, a model that disappeared from the automaker’s lineup almost 15 years ago. If this prototype is indeed the Supra, expect it to share some styling cues with the stunning FT-1 concept unveiled back in 2014.
