The 2017 Chevrolet Volt earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ award. That’s the highest award offered by the safety organization.
In order to qualify for a Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must earn high ratings in five different tests. The Volt earned the highest rating of “good” in all five of those tests, which include the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side crash tests, as well as the roof strength test and head restraints and seats tests. The previous-generaton Volt earned an “acceptable” rating in the small overlap front test.
A Top Safety Pick+ is awarded to vehicles that earn high marks for their available front crash prevention system. The 2017 Volt earned a “superior” rating – the highest rating – for its optional Front Automatic Braking and Low-Speed Front Automatic Braking systems that are part of the optional Adaptive Cruise Control package. The auto-braking system prevented collisions in both the 12-mph low-speed auto-brake and 25-mph high-speed auto-brake tests.
Additionally, the IIHS added headlight testing for the 2017 model year. A vehicle must earn a “good” or “acceptable” for its headlights to earn the top awards. The 2017 Chevrolet Volt earned an acceptable rating for its standard headlights and a good rating when equipped with the optional high-beam assist feature.
Although the Volt was redesigned for the 2016 model year, the IIHS hadn’t tested a second-generation Volt until now. The 2017 Chevrolet Volt was evaluated as part of the IIHS’ EV testing program, and more vehicle results are forthcoming.
