Nissan has been pushing its design language in a new direction that was first seen on the Murano crossover, followed by the Maxima and Altima. Now, the 2016 Nissan Sentra is sporting this new design, with updated technology to complete the package. While the Sentra isn’t all-new for 2016, is the slight refresh enough to breathe life into the compact sedan?
The front end offers up the most notable changes with a new grille, headlight, and foglight design. The grille features the same overall shape but replaces the horizontal chrome bars in favor of a black honeycomb grille. The Nissan emblem seems to float in the center, while the slanted, vertical chrome bars remain. The foglights have been squared off and made more pronounced. But the lights are the most drastic change. The same overall style remains, but the lights themselves have been updated to feature a more pointed and aggressive look.
From the side, the 2016 Sentra looks very similar to the outgoing model, but at the rear more aggressive changes have been made. The taillights share the same design, with the red lights encasing the white, but the new model features lamps that stand out more as they protrude slightly from the body. The reflectors feature a bolder appearance on the redesigned bumper, which now offers a more aggressive design. The trunklid remains unchanged.
The cabin features subtle changes with a slightly more upscale look than the outgoing model. The steering wheel has been redesigned and offers up a cleaner look, with smaller proportions and the steering wheel-mounted controls have been consolidated. The center stack looks unchanged from the outgoing model, aside from some small touches. The shifter is now housed in a black casing in place of the previous chrome surounds. The infotainment screen has been updated, but the controls remain the same. The controls for the HVAC system, as well as the air vents, are also unchanged.
The Nissan Sentra, while a reasonable contender in the compact sedan segment, has been lagging behind the competition in terms of design and styling. For 2016, the refreshed Sentra offers up slightly more aggressive exterior styling, while the cabin boasts small but significant changes. Are they enough to breathe life into the 2016 Nissan Sentra? Last week we discussed the 2017 Hyundai Elantra, and the comments seemed to be solidly divided on the new look.
“Refreshing, compared to the last gen. It still doesn’t look great, but definitely an improvement,” said MrCatman.
“This is revolting. The front grille is too large, and it doesn’t fit the small size of this car. The last gen Elantra looked much better,” said RickHamm87.
“Refreshing. It’s less impish looking and more mature in design. The interior is also clean and less cluttered. The old fluidic design did its job of drawing attention to the company and this new fluidic design doesn’t seem to have harmed sales,” said Midosan.
“Horrible!!! What has the design team done with the once stylish and aesthetically pleasing late model? I would rather keep my 2011 Elantra than be caught in the bland and boring 2017 model. Hyundai really dropped the ball on this one,” said TruDesign.
