Our spy photographers have captured what looks to be a prototype of the upcoming BMW Z5, the replacement for the Z4. We reported sometime back that the replacement for the Bavarian brand’s two-seat roadster will be one of two sports cars that will emerge from the BMW-Toyota partnership — the other could possibly revive the Supra name.
The first thing that stands out in the Z5 prototype is that the retractable hardtop roof has been ditched in favor of a lighter, more conventional soft top. This could possibly mean that the Z4 replacement will lose a significant amount of weight since there won’t be as many moving parts as the current hardtop. Looking at the prototype from all angles, the camouflaged Z5 looks eerily similar to Honda’s much beloved S2000. Compared to current BMW Z4, its replacement appears much shorter in length but retains the cab-rearward design featuring a long hood. The rear deck, however, seems longer due to the car having a more conservative exterior.
No powertrain details have been released for BMW’s upcoming rear-drive, two-seat drop-top but expect it to come with the usual array of turbocharged engines, including a 2.0-liter I-4 and a 3.0-liter I-6. A hybrid powertrain has also been rumored to be part of the Z5’s engine range. The Z5 could also come with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
