The wildly styled 2018 Lexus LC 500 is the latest example of Akio Toyoda’s claim that, since a few years ago, every Lexus has aimed to be exhilarating in every way — from the exterior styling and interior to what’s under the hood and how the car drives. Toyoda, Toyota Motor Corporation CEO and Lexus Master Driver, introduced the LC 500’s world debut and the LF-FC’s North American debut this week at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.
Revealed on an enormous stage compared to most other debuts, the 2018 Lexus LC 500 is an image-building two-door that could emotionally draw buyers to the brand more than the controversial spindle grille has over the last few years. Lexus is proud of the LC 500, and we’ve been following its development for a while — read our exclusive First Look with unique photography HERE.
The days of all Lexus cars being super-quiet are over, at least when you’re at wide-open throttle. To demonstrate the awesomeness of the sound of the LC 500’s powerful V-8 engine, Toyoda simply said, “It sounds like,” and listened to a track of the car accelerating.

There’s more to the Lexus than just concept-car-like styling. Powered by a 468-hp 5.0-liter V-8 with 391 lb-ft of torque, the rear-drive LC 500 uses a 10-speed auto that, unlike other Lexus cars, all crisply allows a little shift shock between gear changes to increase the perception of sportiness and speed. Expect 0-60 mph acceleration in about 4.3 seconds, though count on MotorTrend.com for track-tested numbers closer to the car’s expected Spring 2017 on-sale date.
Toyoda noted that like Sofia Vergara, he may have a slight accent when speaking in English, but the language he does speak is cars. We’ve driven prototypes of the LC 500 before, and can’t wait until we drive and test a production-ready model.
Until then, tell us: What effect, if any, do you think the 2018 Lexus LC 500 will have on consumers’ perception of the brand?
