Toyota Gazoo Racing has announced that it will enter this year’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring with a three-car lineup. In addition to a Lexus RC and RC F, the team announced Toyota’s upcoming crossover, the C-HR, will complete the roster.
Toyota boss and team member Akio Toyoda said that the race plays an important role in Toyota’s vehicle development because the harsh and unforgiving conditions of the Nürburgring allow it to refine its cars and team members. Additionally, Toyota Gazoo Racing will use the experience gained in motorsport to improve the road cars being produced by Toyota and Lexus.
Toyota initially participated at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring under the banner of Gazoo Racing, when it entered a Toyota Altezza RS200 into the event. Other vehicles that Toyota has entered into the race since 2007 include the Lexus IS F, LFA, and the Toyota GT86, which is marketed as the Scion FR-S in the U.S. In 2015, Toyota united the racing activities of Toyota, Lexus, and Gazoo Racing to become Toyota Gazoo Racing. Though the decision to take a crossover racing is an unusual one, it’s unclear if the C-HR entered in the famed endurance race is the real deal or just a silhouette car.
Originally shown as a concept car at the 2014 Paris auto show, the production C-HR will compete with other small crossovers like the Nissan Juke, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Fiat 500X, and Mini Countryman. A second, more production-ready C-HR concept was shown at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show and again at the 2015 Los Angeles auto show where it wore the Scion badge. The production version of the Toyota C-HR will debut at the 2016 Geneva auto show.
