The Detroit News reports that a flexible steel cable that attaches the Malibu’s safety belts to the vehicle can fatigue over years of use, exacerbated by passengers moving around in their seats while restrained. The solution is to replace the outboard lap belt mounting brackets, relocating the belt tensioner slightly rearward. As part of the recall repair, dealership technicians will inspect the cable and replace the lap belt pretensioner if necessary.

GM says the recall affects 437,045 cars in the U.S. market and roughly 32,000 internationally. Similar problems triggered a recall last year affecting more than 1.5 million Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook vehicles produced from 2009 onward. GM says the current recall was spurred by 36 claims of equipment problems, though no crashes or fatalities and only one minor injury were reportedly attributed to the malfunction.
