Lamborghini Urus is expected to be based on same architecture as the upcoming Bentley BentaygaItalian government said to have been involved in securing domestic production of new model
Lamborghini is poised to announce Italian production of its long-promised premium SUV, according to news agency reports.
The reports say that Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann and Rupert Stadler – boss of Lamborghini’s parent company Audi – and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi will all attend a public press conference late this week to reveal the plans.
The Italian government is said to have been very keen for the new model to be built in Italy. The production version of the Urus will be built on the same basic architecture as the new Audi Q7 and upcoming Bentley Bentayga.
This opened the way for the car to be assembled in Slovakia, alongside the new Q7. News agency reports say that the Italian government has granted Lamborghini a number of ‘tax breaks and other benefits’ to ensure that a new domestic facility is opened for the Urus and ‘some hundreds’ of new jobs are created.
The Urus was first shown as a concept at the Beijing show in April 2012. The concept made extensive use of carbon fibre in its construction and was powered by a turbocharged V10 engine, hooked up to a transmission-mounted electric motor.
Early estimates suggested that Lamborghini could sell 3000 units per year of the car, but the increasing popularity of super-premium SUVs globally could push that figure higher. In any case, a production Urus would more than double Lamborghini sales and become the brand’s best-selling model.
