The open-top Smart Fortwo is due to go on sale in the third quarter of this yearOpen-top version of Smart's Fortwo city car will go on sale in the third quarter of this year, featuring a fabric soft-top roof. It's been spotted testing
The Smart Fortwo Cabriolet has been spotted testing ahead of a planned launch in the third quarter of 2015.
The latest pictures of the convertible two seater show the fabric roof folded, and reveal that it works in much the same way as the previous version. It folds back to sit above the boot, although our pictures show that it appears to come with a slightly stronger rear roll bar than the last generation of Fortwo Cabriolet.
The engine and transmission options have not yet been revealed, but are expected to mirror those of the third-generation Fortwo and Forfour.
Powering the Fortwo Cabriolet will be either a 0.9-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with 70bhp and 67lb ft, or a turbocharged 898cc three-cylinder unit which produces 89bhp and 100lb ft. Transmission options are set to include a five-speed manual and a DCT dual-clutch automatic.
Similarly, the Cabriolet is likely to be offered in the same three trim levels as its closed-roof sibling, with specifications dubbed Passion, Prime and Proxy available.
Stylistically, the convertible Fortwo remains very close to the standard car, but it gets a smaller rear window and contrasting fabric colours on the roof.
Given that the standard Fortwo starts at £11,125 in the UK, expect the cabriolet to command a significant premium when it goes on sale.
