On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. We had hoped to confuse you with this blurry, frankly terrible shifter photo, but alas, you came through again. Iggy correctly identified the shifter as belonging to a BMW 2002—but he had a few details off. (We’ll still give him the win, don’t worry!)
-While Iggy guessed that the shifter is from a 1970 BMW 2002, it is in fact from a 1971 BMW 2002, and not just any 2002, but a Touring model! The Touring was a 2002 with slightly oddball hatchback bodywork and folding rear seats. We rummaged these original press photos out of our archives. According to BMW’s figures, the tii’s 128-hp, fuel-injected four-cylinder engine was muscular enough to propel the Touring to 62 mph in 9.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 118 mph. Those are hot-hatch numbers!
