Unlikely scenarios. Obscured logic. Running in slow-motion—who does anything in slow-motion, let alone run?—aaaaaaand, ka-ching! Yep, advertisers are not above using utter ridiculousness and stylized distortions of reality to woo customers, whether it be to automobiles, fashion, or in the case of this amazing new Mercedes promotional short called “A Fistful of Wolves,” both.
The film stars Australian-born Justin O’Shea, buying director at online fashion store mytheresa.com, the jaunty Chipperfield brothers, fashion editors Veronika Heilbrunner and Julia Knolle, and the always-groovy orange-and-black Mercedes-Benz C111 research car. What makes this spot worth watching (and sharing) is its ingeniously satirical take on several melodramatic advertising genres at once.
Intended to promote the upcoming Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, the film is three and a half minutes of pure, SNL-grade mockery. Here’s how Mercedes describes the plot: “O’Shea finds himself caught up in a series of clichés of fashion advertising. It’s serious and dramatic: He runs in slow motion, talks about his emotions and the hype that surrounds him. Good to know that he can always rely on Veronika and his circle of friends to bring him back to the real world.” Watch it now:

Whiffs of Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln commercials and any number of other automotive ads (including Mercedes’ own spots, to be sure) can be detected throughout this brilliant film short, with plenty of humorous moments that would probably be even funnier if we actually knew who any of the film’s stars happened to be. But, hey, if nothing else, the short production is a rare chance to see the C111 in motion as it traverses the streets of Berlin’s Grunewald district.
