Northern California is where the 24 Hours of LeMons began, back in 2006, and so we have a very large population of fanatically devoted racers in this part of the country. When we ran the Arse Freeze-a-Palooza race last month at Sonoma Raceway aka Sears Point, we had room for 175 cars at the facility… and more than 300 teams trying to get in. That means a lot of teams that got put on the waitlist and couldn’t race, and their agonized cries were so heart-rending that we convinced Sonoma Raceway to let us have the track a month later. Teams that were waitlisted last month got first priority for acceptance to this weekend’s Good Effort Grand Prix. Lots of BMW 3-series cars, lots of Mazda Miatas, lots of teams with ordinary-type cars that don’t quite measure up to the amazing standards set by many teams in 2014. Still, though, some good stuff rolled past the justices of the LeMons Supreme Court today. Let’s see what we’ve got!
The Zero Below Racing Chevrolet Corvair, which features Buick 215 (aka Rover V8) power, is back for another attempt at the seemingly unattainable goal of a double-digit lap total.
This Mazda suffered from a grab bag of tech-inspection-failing problems, but the team’s elaborate (if puzzling) “Evolution Is OK” theme and willingness to fix broken stuff was encouraging.
The GMObiles Chevrolet El Camino is back, now with a cool-looking rattlecan paint job and hand-fabbed front bumper. You can hardly tell that it spent decades sinking into the dirt on a Northern California farm.
Harold, Maude, and their Jaguar E-Type hearse are back.
A Volvo 240 with Aqua Velva theme just makes sense.
The spare-tire cover found on a highway shoulder adds class to the Aqua Volvo.
Who knew that K.I.T.T. was a Honda Prelude?
Joseph’s Coat of Many Colors will be racing this weekend.
Apparently inspired by the Cookie Monster Warlord BMW we saw in Houston last fall, here’s a BMW 735i with a very good Cookie Monster theme.
Because this is the 24 Hours of LeMons, we had two teams with Sesame Street teams. Hilarity ensued as they mingled with members of teams with disturbingly contrasting themes.
What other race series would have a group of racers that looked like this?
Be sure to check in here Saturday night to see how the first race session goes!
