Jaguar is launching its gorgeous new XE sports sedan in Europe next spring, but the firm has scheduled its U.S. introduction a year later—it’ll arrive here as a 2017 model—in order to bring us a full smorgasbord of powertrain and driveline options. Well, and also probably so it can work out any kinks and ensure supply equals demand. But the more-stuff-for-us thing is a cooler story.
We’ve learned at events prior to the Paris auto show that the U.S.-spec XE will not only be available with the previously announced supercharged 340-horse V-6 in the XE S, but we’ll also see a turbocharged four-cylinder, perhaps in both 200- and 240-hp states of tune. Also good: The XE will arrive packing optional four-cylinder turbo-diesel power; the global XE offers 163- and 180-hp diesels, but it’s unclear at this point which one we’ll get. (We bet it will be the latter.) All four-hole powerplants will be derived from Jaguar’s new Ingenium engine family.
All-wheel drive will be on the options sheet for the rear-drive XE at launch as well, but we’ll have to wait an as-yet-unspecified amount of time for a row-your-own manual gearbox, but Jaguar promises that it is indeed coming. An eight-speed automatic will have to suffice for early adopters. But, hey, they can at least take advantage of the all-new infotainment setup. So there’s that.
