On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. The low quality of the photo used for this week’s contest initially threw off many of you. We received plenty of guesses that the shifter belonged to a Volvo, but commenter Seth A. came closest (and quickest) in identifying it as a mid-’70s 240 series Volvo, which was the basis for the Bertone-bodied 262C, so he’ll be awarded a Save the Manuals button and sticker.
The Volvo pictured here is from our May 1979 issue. Accused of having the most conservative reputation around, Volvo unleashed the 262c to show the world they were not as predictable as they had become famous for. With a 2.7-liter V-6 engine which revved eagerly to the 6000-rpm redline, the Volvo hit a top speed of 110 mph and could accelerate 0-6- mph in 11.4 seconds. While it was Volvo’s only V-6 coupe in its lineup at the time, we found the 262C not quite up to the serious motoring that Volvo was aiming for.
