Here it is Miata fans, short and sweet: When the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata makes its American beachhead next year, it’ll be armed with a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine.
Although Mazda still hasn’t spilled the beans regarding specific output figures, it’s a good bet that the numbers will be very close or identical to those produced by the 2.0-liter currently doing duty in the Mazda 3. In that application, the Skyactiv mill produces 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of twist.
The only potential hiccup if those numbers are correct is that the new ND would be shy of the NC’s 167 horsepower when equipped with a manual transmission. (It makes 158 when paired with an automatic.) However, the 10-lb-ft jump in torque and a big diet—Mazda was shooting for 200 or more pounds, which would put it the ND at around 2300—should more than offset the slight discrepancy.
Still, Mazda could encounter a few disappointed potential buyers. In a perfect world, the automaker would turn up the wick just enough to silence such skeptics, even if it means sticking to the premium fuel recommendation of the NC.
