Classic as they may be, BMW Z3 roadsters are a dime a dozen out there, but to see a Z3 coupe (which is essentially a Z3 shooting brake) on the road—well, that’s a pretty special occasion. We think the same reaction would await a Mazda Miata shooting brake, should Mazda consider such a thing. So it is with great pleasure (and fingers crossed) that we present fantasy renderings of a long-roofed version of Mazda’s recently revealed 2016 MX-5 Miata sports car.
With its extremely long nose and short tail, the Miata has a dramatic, baseball-cap profile in shooting-brake form, just like the beloved Z3 coupe. And with the new Miata roadster starting out with about 200 pounds less weight than its most recent predecessor, the little wagonette could still be described as “feathery” even after any roof and tailgate structure are added. Indeed, the body could even end up being stiffer than the roadster’s, and could therefore help it circle a road course with even more dexterity. Of course, the look would be as polarizing as anything on the road, which makes us love the idea of this car even more.

This isn’t the first time a hardtop Miata has been proposed, and alas, none (other than a retractable one) has seen the light of day. Could this time be different? The Miata is the best-selling roadster of all time, after all. There’s got to be a business case in there somewhere.
