When Nissan announced that the 2017 Armada would be based on the foreign-market Patrol, it was big news. Not only would it be the Armada’s first redesign since 2004, the U.S. would finally get its own version of the legendary body-on-frame off-roader. Except when the Armada showed up, it was missing all of the Patrol’s off-road goodies. Still, that hasn’t stopped Nissan from trying to capitalize on the growing popularity of overland adventuring with the Armada Mountain Patrol concept.
Built for this year’s Overland Expo West event, the Armada Mountain Patrol appears to be outfitted with wider fenders, a lift kit, rock rails, a steel bumper and winch, off-road tires, a snorkel, auxiliary lights, and a light bar. Around back, it looks like Nissan added a steel rear bumper and winch, a spare tire, traction mats, fuel canisters, and mounts for other overland hardware. The roof also features a rack that supports a tent and awning. Actual parts and features won’t be announced until next month, but based on these renderings and sketches, the Armada Mountain Patrol is off to a good start.
“If you are building an overlanding rig, the Nissan Armada is a great place to start with its impressive off-road capabilities, great on-road comfort and its suite of Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies,” said Brandon White, Nissan’s North American head of marketing, in a release. “With help from Nissan Truck enthusiasts, the Armada Mountain Patrol will take that rugged foundation and transform into the ultimate overlanding vehicle – equipped with the latest in overlanding tech, camping comforts and tools needed to take on any adventure.”
Before the design is finalized, fans are being asked to help pick the tires, tent, and vinyl wrap. To vote, head to Nissan’s Facebook or Instagram page. Then look for the concept to be revealed in about a month at Overland Expo West. There’s virtually no chance the Armada Mountain Patrol becomes a full production model, but some of Nissan’s past crowdsourced concepts have ended up looking pretty cool.
