Lexus is expected to debut a new ES sedan later this month at the Beijing auto show. Judging from a teaser image the automaker has released, we can already tell the midsizer features a more compelling grille design.
Instead of horizontal slats, the grille of the new ES features vertical lines that orient toward the Lexus badge. The blue badge seen in the image signals a hybrid model will remain in the lineup.

The ES is right on time for a redesign, as Lexus hasn’t completely revamped it since the 2013 model year here in the U.S. We’ve praised the current model for its cavernous back seat, but as the sedan enters its next generation, we hope Lexus addresses its vague steering and poor body control. Because it will sit on the new TNGA platform shared with the Camry and Avalon, we fully expect the ES will drive and ride better than the current version.
The current ES features a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine making 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque and paired to a six-speed automatic. If you opt for the hybrid, you’ll get a 2.5-liter inline-four and an electric motor for a total of 200 hp. The hybrid, which we tested hitting 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, also comes with a CVT. Lexus hasn’t released powertrain specs for the new ES, but we do know both gas and hybrid versions will be available. The hybrid may be similar to the 2.5-liter four-cylinder system on the Camry Hybrid.
The Lexus ES will debut in Beijing on April 25.
