Toyota certainly disappointed fans when it brought a Supra race car concept to the Geneva Motor Show, only to announce we won’t see the road car until next year. But according to the latest rumor, BMW fans won’t have to wait nearly as long to see the Supra’s platform-mate. Supposedly, we’ll see the production Z4 sometime this summer. From what we can see in these images, there isn’t much left to do before the Z4 is ready.
Technically, this prototype is still camouflaged, but the swirls don’t do much to hide the production bodywork. Look closely, and you can see everything from the grille to the intakes, headlights, and even the creases in the sheet metal. Compared to the Z4 concept, the production car isn’t quite as aggressively styled. But like previous spy shots have shown, the major design elements all appear to still be intact. The front clearly features a wide, thin grille and angular headlights, with a cooling vent behind the front wheels and a strong character line stretching back toward the taillights. We don’t see as large of a spoiler, and the stylized exhaust tips have been swapped out in favor of conventional round pipes, but BMW deserves credit for sticking closely to the concept.
Despite BMW’s attempts to cover it up, our photographer was also able to get a few shots of the interior once the driver dropped the top. A few details may change by the time the Z4 goes on sale, but the cabin looks just as production-ready as the rest of the car. Designers appear to have stuck with the same basic layout for the dash and center console that the rest of the current BMW lineup uses. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen do look freshly updated, and the climate controls have been relocated.
If we had to guess, we’d say this is probably the entry-level four-cylinder version. A turbocharged inline-six is also reportedly in the works, but we’d expect that version to include features such as an Individual drive mode setting and adaptive cruise control. Both appear to be missing on this particular prototype.
