A new report from Reuters revealed six automakers are recalling a total of 2.5 million vehicles due to defective airbag inflators made by Takata. Unlike previous recalls, the recent announcements deal with the front passenger airbag instead of the driver’s airbag. This new recall arrives a day after Ford announced a recall of 1.9 million cars for the same defective inflators.
Thursday’s announcement includes 1.9 million trucks and SUVs from General Motors, 217,000 Volkswagen vehicles, 200,000 vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, 92,000 from BMW, 54,000 from Jaguar Land Rover, and 5,100 vans from Daimler Vans USA. In total, the Takata airbag recall affects 15 automakers and 16.4 million vehicles in the U.S. Takata also declared in May that 35-40 million inflators are defective, meaning there are upwards of 100 million vehicles with faulty Takata components, which have been linked to 13 deaths and 100 injuries. The inflators have the potential to explode violently and spray shards of metal into the car’s cabin when exposed to excessive levels of high humidity.
GM’s recall is one of the largest of Thursday’s announcement and affects trucks and SUVs manufactured between 2007 and 2011. The automaker also revealed to Reuters that it created a third-party environmental study to see the long-term temperature effects on the inflators. GM also said in a press release that the vehicles affected “do not pose an unreasonable safety risk at this time” based on an analysis of parts returned from testing, which include Takata front passenger airbags made specifically for GM vehicles and are packaged for minimal exposure to moisture. However, the automaker said it will continue to test and monitor the Takata inflators in its vehicles and will take action in cooperation with NHTSA if it deems them unsafe.
Vehicles affected include 2007- 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade lineup, which includes standard model, the Escalade ESV, and the EXT. Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks built from 2009 to 2011 are also affected.
