Toyota is recalling 2.87 million vehicles worldwide for potentially faulty seat belts. In the U.S. market, the recall includes over 1 million vehicles including the 2006-2012 RAV4 and 2012-2014 RAV4 EV crossovers.
The Problem: According to Toyota, the lap-shoulder seat belts in the second row may not properly restrain passengers in the event of an accident. “There is a possibility that, in the event of a very severe frontal crash, the lap belt webbing could contact a portion of the metal seat cushion frame, become cut, and separate,” the automaker said in a statement. Toyota has received two reports of rear seat belts separating after a crash, although it’s unclear if the problem has been linked to any injuries, Reuters reports.
The Fix: Toyota will notify owners affected by the recall. Eventually, drivers will be able to take their vehicles into dealerships, where Toyota will add resin covers to the metal seat cushion frame. As usual, the recall will be conducted at no cost to the driver.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The Toyota recall affects approximately 1.12 million vehicles in the U.S. including 2006-2012 RAV4 and 2012-2014 RAV4 EV SUVs. According to Reuters, Toyota is also calling back 625,000 vehicles in Europe, 434,000 vehicles in China, 177,000 vehicles in Japan, and 307,000 vehicles in other regions around the world for the same problem.
