The upcoming Toyota C-HR will be built in Europe, the automaker announced. Production of the subcompact crossover will take place at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT) in Sakarya, Turkey.
Power for the Toyota C-HR will come from either a conventional gas engine or a hybrid system based on the all-new 2016 Toyota Prius. Toyota has yet to reveal full details on either powertrain.
“I am extremely pleased to be able to announce this expansion of our local production in Europe,” Dr Johan van Zyl, TME President and CEO, said in a release. “The crossover market has been booming and will continue to grow in Europe and elsewhere.”
The new C-HR crossover, which Toyota says is the first hybrid vehicle built in Turkey, joins the Corolla and Verso models at TMMT. Currently, Toyota builds hybrid vehicles at two other European plants, including the Auris Hybrid and Auris Touring Sport Hybrid at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK in Burnaston, Derbyshire, and the Yaris Hybrid at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France.
Toyota says plant capacity will increase from 150,000 to 280,000 vehicles per year, while jobs could increase from 3,000 to 4,000 employees depending on demand.
First shown as a two-door concept at the 2014 Paris auto show, Toyota confirmed the C-HR for production at the 2015 Frankfurt show with a four-door concept. Toyota will show the production version of the C-HR crossover at the 2016 Geneva auto show next month.
A Scion-branded version of the C-HR concept for the U.S. market was also shown at the 2015 Los Angeles auto show in November. With the demise of the Scion brand, the C-HR will be sold under the Toyota brand in the U.S.
