An all-electric version of the Morgan 3 Wheeler sports car will be unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next week ahead of going on sale in 2016, the company has confirmed.
Dubbed the EV3, the car will be the second pure electric vehicle to be built by Malvern-based Morgan. The first, the Plus E, was unveiled at the Geneva motor show in 2012.
Powering the EV3 is a single electric motor mounted at the rear, providing 101bhp. The company also says the car will weigh less than its 450kg combustion-engined counterpart, and will come with an electric range of 150 miles.
By comparison, the Plus E featured a 94bhp electric motor mated to a five-speed manual transmission. It was said to be capable of sprinting to 62mph in 6.0 seconds, with a top speed of 115mph, and had an electric range of 120 miles.
Morgan says that the “bespoke to order, hand-crafted" EV3 will “look at the world of zero emissions motoring with an entirely new approach.” Stylistically, the EV3 gets a more rounded, aerodynamic shape than the current car, and does without its side-mounted exhausts and protruding engine at the front.
Although currently a prototype, Morgan says the EV3 will be put through a full testing and development programme ahead of its launch.
The standard Morgan 3 Wheeler is powered by a 1983cc V-twin engine, producing 80bhp. That’s enough to get it to 60mph in 8.0 seconds. It has a five-star Autocar road test rating.
