The Mazda MX-5 Miata (known by such names as the Mazda Roadster, Eunos Roadster, and Steve-san) is right in the thick of its 25th anniversary celebration. The third-generation “NC” model is on its way out, the fourth-gen car has been partially revealed, and in the midst of this hubbub, Mazda’s decided to send a production 2014-model-year example off to run the ADAC Zurich 24-Hour Race next month. Held at the famed, storied, hallowed, venerated, and reviled-by-Sir Jackie Stewart Nürburgring, the event is a torture-test of over-hill, over-dale, ’round-the-Karussell competition.

The lucky MX-5 will be prepared and campaigned in the V3 class by JOTA Sport, Le Mans veterans who run a Zytek-Nissan LMP2 prototype in the European Le Mans series. Mods in the V3 cars are basically limited to safety equipment, and the group is comprised of production-spec cars with 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated engines. It’s sort of like LeMons, but with more new cars, fewer Cessnas and no Judge Phil.
If you happen to be in Germany, you can check out the Nürburgring event on June 21. Otherwise, mosey on over to sleepy, dusty Buttonwillow, California for the Button Turrible LeMons race. You’re likely to see a racing Miata there, too, only one that’s likely way, way less special.
