It’s hard to imagine a more scintillating ride than McLaren’s spectacular, wet-your-pants-fast P1 hypercar, but rumor has it that the firm is considering offering an even more focused P1-based model that would be limited to racetrack use.
According to a report from the U.K.’s Autocar , the “P1 Track” project is already in the early stages of development, with production numbers not expected to climb out of the low double digits. The report states that the model will get even more extreme bodywork and a suspension permanently set in its lowest setting, while the powertrain will produce more power and torque than the already stratospheric 903 horsepower and 664 lb-ft given by the P1’s turbo V-8/hybrid setup.
The Autocar report says that McLaren would offer the P1 Track model only to the P1’s current 375-member customer base, and that the factory would likely store and maintain the cars on behalf of their owners. It would then arrange track events throughout the year where the lucky buggers can meet, drive their cars, and spread beluga caviar all over their bodies using a horn from an endangered Sumatran rhino.
If this whole thing sounds familiar, it should. Ferrari started all of this you-buy-it, we-keep-it business with its “XX” program, starting in 2005 with its track-only super-Enzo, the FXX, and more recently with the 599XX and the upcoming LaFerrari XX. And like those Italian track specials, the super-P1 is likely to cost more than double the $1.15M price of the car on which it’s based.
