Buick is among the first car brands to make backup cameras standard across its lineup ahead of a looming government mandate.
All 2015 Buicks will have backup cameras, a first for General Motors as the company begins to comply with a recent federal ruling for every new car and light-duty truck to include them by the 2019 model year. By our count, Infiniti is the only nameplate to include backup cameras on every car it currently sells without tossing them in equipment packages. Honda and Acura, save for a few outgoing 2014 models that will be replaced or laid to rest, fit standard backup cameras on all models and will do the same as Buick for 2015. While more than half of all 2014 model-year cars on the road have cameras, some entry-level models such as the Toyota Yaris still don’t offer them as an option.

In March, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved the regulation after proposing it in 2010, claiming that backup cameras could save up to 69 lives each year and only cost up to $142 extra per vehicle if adding an interior screen is required. Small-volume automakers are exempt for the initial camera rollout, which starts by requiring them on 10 percent of an automaker’s range built in 2016 all the way to full adoption by May 2018. Additional rules dictate the camera’s field of view and how quickly the image must appear.
