Large personal luxury coupes have all but faded from existence, which we think you’ll agree is a damn shame once you take in all 226 inches of this 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. And with a span of 126.3 inches between the front and rear wheels, this generation of Eldorado has the longest wheelbase of any front-wheel-drive car ever made. The bold red paint job just enhances these insane proportions. This loaded Biarritz with just 790 miles on the odometer will hit the auction block at Barrett-Jackson’s 2019 Palm Beach auction next week.
Impressively, this survivor of the Malaise Era has only been owned by one family since it was new. The red-and-white coupe has just about every option you can get on a 1978 Eldorado, including the Biarritz luxury package with “Astro Roof.” Inside the red pillow-top interior, you’ll find a reclining power passenger seat with six-way power adjuster, illuminated passenger vanity mirror, power door locks, and a radio with 8-track tape player. Other features include automatic climate control, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power trunk lid release, rear window defogger, a stowaway spare tire, digital clock, and Twilight Sentinel illuminated entry system. To top it all off, an Astro Roof was added as a factory option from Cadillac. Another blast from the past: Power from the 425-cubic-inch V-8 engine is routed to the front wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission.
The 1978 model year was the last for this majestic Cadillac land yacht, and the wheelbase and overall dimensions of the subsequent eighth-generation Eldorado would shrink significantly. It may not be for everyone, but if you want to roll in ultimate 1970s style this well-preserved Caddy is hard to beat.
