After teasing us with the phrase “Toyota Supra is back” on social media last week, the automaker is confirming more details on the car’s upcoming appearance at Goodwood. The Supra is coming to the event, but now we know it will only debut in prototype form and with plenty of camouflage.
This will be the first time the development Supra has been seen in action anywhere in the world, Toyota says. Two people integral to the car’s development will drive up the hill course: Supra Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada and test driver Herwig Daenens. The Supra prototype will wear a wrap in the black, red, and white colors of Toyota Gazoo Racing.
The Toyota Supra packs a front-mounted inline six-cylinder engine that drives the rear wheels. It’s expected to have double the body rigidity of the Toyota 86, as well as a perfect 50:50 weight balance front to rear. Toyota has also said that the model will drive differently than its platform-mate, the BMW Z4. Both cars will be made by Magna Steyr in Austria.
Toyota showed off a racing concept version of the sports car at the Geneva Motor Show. This model, dubbed the GR Supra Racing Concept, will be on display at Goodwood as well. We also recently got a look at the Toyota Supra Race Car that will enter the NASCAR Xfinity Series next season.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place July 12-15. Toyota also confirmed the Supra will go on sale internationally in the first half of 2019.
