Many prestigious cars are set to storm the hill at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, including a number of vintage and modern Ford Mustangs—and even one autonomous pony car. One such vintage ‘Stang is the recently rediscovered 1968 Mustang from the movie Bullitt, which will appear with its modern-day special edition counterpart to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the classic film.
In case you missed the story of how this famous movie car was reintroduced to the world, here’s a quick refresher. The car is one of two Mustang fastbacks that were used in 1968’s Bullitt. After filming wrapped, the two Mustangs were separated. One was found last year in Baja California, Mexico, decades after it was believed to have been crushed. The whereabouts of the other car remained a mystery, as it was sold to an unknown private buyer. That all changed at this year’s Detroit auto show, when the car was revealed alongside the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt. The car had been in the hands of Robert Kiernan, who purchased it in 1974. Knowing its storied past, he had plans to restore it before its big reveal. Those plans were put on hold when Kiernan passed away in 2014. His son, Sean Kiernan, inherited the Mustang and reached out to Ford to fulfill his father’s dream of bringing the car back into the spotlight.
“You know, it was never our intention to keep this car a secret from everybody,” Sean Kiernan said in a release. “I’m just completely buzzing to join with Ford and the new Bullitt and show this car to the world on one of the biggest stages there is.”
Of course, the two Bullitts won’t be the only Mustangs at Goodwood. Vaughan Gitten Jr.’s 900-hp RTR Mustang drift car and a one-off Eagle Squadron Mustang GT will also tackle the hill. The 700-hp Mustang GT packs a 5.0-liter V-8 engine and sports a paint job that pays tribute to RAF fighter pilots of World War II, many of whom served at Goodwood airfield.
In addition, Ford’s high-performance Ford GT supercar returns to Goodwood to be driven by Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team drivers Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell. The supercar is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine that produces 647 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque.
