Volkswagen has announced that its two new crossovers, the 2018 Atlas and the 2018 Tiguan, will receive a new bumper-to-bumper warranty that will cover owners for 6 years or 72,000 miles. Additionally, the coverage will also be transferable should the original owner sell the vehicle before the warranty expires. The new warranty coverage includes all powertrain and drivetrain components such as the engine, transmission, and the available all-wheel drive system.
Hinrich J. Woebcken, Volkswagen of America’s president and chief executive officer, points out that the 2018 Atlas and Tiguan were designed with American consumers in mind and that the new warranty “addressed the needs of American buyers head-on.” Woebcken continued by saying that the automaker is confident in the build quality and reliability of the 2018 Atlas and Tiguan, and believes that the warranty will help reduce the ownership costs of Volkswagen vehicles.
Compared to its main competitors from Honda, Toyota, and Ford, which have 3-year or 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranties, the 2018 Atlas and Tiguan’s warranty is twice as long. Additionally, Volkswagen points out that unlike Hyundai and Kia, their warranty is fully transferable whereas its Korean competitors’ powertrain warranties only cover up to 5 years or 60,000 miles for the second owner. Volkswagen says the new warranty currently only applies to the Atlas and Tiguan. The automaker has yet to announce whether it plans to extend the coverage to other models such as the upcoming refreshed 2018 Golf family.
