Fiat Chrysler was one of the biggest players at the Los Angeles auto show last month, revealing Alfa Romeo’s first SUV and the new Jeep Compass. But it looks like the automaker is sitting on the bench for the next major auto show in Detroit.
According to the Detroit Free Press, FCA won’t debut a new vehicle at the Detroit auto show, which opens to the media January 8. Instead, it plans to launch a new vehicle the week before at the Consumer Electronics Show.
It’s unusual for one of the Detroit Three automakers to come empty-handed to Detroit. But it’s not unprecedented: FCA didn’t reveal a new car in 2010 during the throes of bankruptcy. Although it reportedly won’t reveal anything new, FCA will still have floor space to showcase its lineup of vehicles from Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, and Ram.
Expect plenty of debuts at the Detroit auto show this year, including the 2018 Toyota Camry, Lexus LS, and likely, the Kia GT. GM, Ford, BMW, Honda, Nissan, and even Chinese automaker Guangzhou Automotive have also planned debuts.
Detroit is still home to the most prominent auto show in the U.S., but CES is gaining ground in the automotive world. Faraday Future debuted a concept car at the last show, and has confirmed it will debut its first production vehicle at next year’s show. Ford debuted the C-Max Solar Energi concept at CES a few years ago, and Volkswagen debuted the BUDD-E concept earlier this year.
